A Retrospective Analysis of Game AI in 2008

Last year, Alex over at AIGameDev.com wrote about his Top 5 Trends and Predictions for 2008. Not only was it a fun article to write, but it also very popular! Now seems like a good time to go back over those five predictions and see how accurate they actually were. He also added a few more trends of 2008 that he didn't predict but turned out to be very important nonetheless.

Call for Nominations: 2008 AiGameDev.com Awards for Game AI

The end of the year is always a good time to reflect on the games that came out in the last twelve months - and particularly those with great artificial intelligence. Of course, December is a great time for awards too, and who better to give out Game AI awards than the leading community for artificial intelligence in games on the internet.

Applying Evolutionary Algorithms to the Galactic Arms Race

While AI is playing an increasingly important role in the games industry these days, games entirely based on AI are few and far between. One in particular though, is Neuro-Evolving Robotic Operatives (NERO) which was released in 2005 by Kenneth Stanley and his team at the University of Texas at Austin, and totaled over 100,000 downloads. NERO involved evolving AI bots navigating and fighting in virtual battle grounds.

AiGameDev.com caught up with Ken Stanley, for an exclusive interview, to find out about his next project, which is also based on neural networks and genetic algorithms, and a technique called Neuro-Evolution of Augmented Topologies, a.k.a. NEAT, which we covered previously on the site.

Weekends at AiGameDev.com are dedicated to rounding up smart links from the web relating to artificial intelligence and game development. This week, we have various articles regarding Crysis, and some interesting posts on well know AI blogs; as always, there are some good articles and blog posts for you to read. Remember, there's also lots of great content to be found in the forums here! (All you have to do is introduce yourself). Also don't forget the Wiki for a repository of knowledge about artificial intelligence in game development!

Terrain Annotations: From Designer Hints to Automated Pre-processing

An AI that can't understand its game environment is pretty useless; but that's what terrain reasoning is for! In most games, implementing terrain reasoning starts with annotations of the terrain, which can either be placed manually by designers or automatically generated by a pre-process in the tools pipeline.

Over the last month and a half, Alex has been working with some of the resident experts from the AiGameDev.com forums to create special reports on specific topics. Here's the first part of a document on terrain reasoning, which covers the annotation process in particular.

What If Game AI Had Been Solved...

Alex Champandard has posted an editorial about "Looking beyond technology to improve AI in games." In short, game AI in industry has really come of age recently in terms of technology, so it might be time to question our assumptions and see what else we can do to improve the field of game AI as a whole, as well as the community behind it.
